Bunding Solutions

Stop spills before they start. Whether you run a regional maintenance shed or a high-throughput distribution centre, purposeful bunding keeps oils, fuels and corrosives where they belong, boosts productivity and shields your crew. Even a small leak can creep into drains, soils or streams, resulting in hefty fines and unplanned downtime.

Chemical bunds, ranging from compact spill pallets to multi-IBC compounds, form a rugged secondary barrier that captures drips and bursts during storage, transfer or decanting. By locking down these hazards at their source, you can protect people, conserve the environment and sharpen your industrial storage workflow.

Sizing guide for bunding systems

As a rule of thumb:

  • Single drum: a 250 L spill pallet suits most 205 L drums
  • Four-drum station: use a 4-drum 230 L bunded pallet
  • IBC: select a 1,100 L spill containment pallet rated to at least 1,100 kg or higher if the liquid has a specific gravity above 1 kg/L

Compliance note: In accordance with AS 1940, bunding for chemicals must hold either 110% of the largest container or 25% of the total stored volume, whichever is greater

FAQs

What is bunding?

Bunding contains hazardous liquids, preventing spills from reaching drains or soil and supporting compliance with the Work Health and Safety Regulation 2017.

Why is bunding important?

It reduces environmental risk, supports compliance and ensures chemical bunding meets AS 1940 capacity requirements.

What size bund or spill containment unit should I use?

Choose a bund that meets 110% of the largest container or 25% of the total volume, in line with AS 1940 requirements.

Are ContainIt bunding products compliant with Australian Standards?

Yes. All bunding for chemicals is designed to meet relevant Australian Standards for load capacity, durability and chemical resistance.

Can bunding be used for flammable liquids?

Yes, but specialised dangerous goods storage containers may be better suited for fuels and solvents.

What are the five steps of spill containment?

Identify risks, contain the spill, control hazards, clean safely and dispose of waste in line with regulations.

What sort of bunding do I need?

Match the material to the liquid:

  • Polyethylene for most acids, alkalis and oils
  • Galvanised steel for fuels and non-corrosive chemicals
  • Stainless steel for aggressive solvents or food-grade processing

How do I choose the right bunding solution?

Consider the chemical type, volume, accessibility and environment. The right solution improves safety and compliance, as well as workflow efficiency.
