Bunding Solutions

Stop spills before they start. Whether you run a regional maintenance shed or a high‑throughput distribution centre, purpose‑built bunding keeps oils, fuels and corrosives where they belong, boosts productivity and shields your crew. Even a small leak can creep into drains, soil or streams, landing you with hefty fines and unplanned downtime.

Chemical bunds, ranging from compact spill pallets to multi‑IBC compounds, form a rugged secondary barrier that captures drips and bursts during storage, transfer or decanting. By locking down these hazards at their source, you protect people, preserve the environment and sharpen your industrial storage workflow.

FAQs

What is bunding?

A bund is a purpose-built containment barrier, often a tray, kerb or raised wall, designed to capture any liquid escaping from primary vessels such as drums, IBCs or tanks. SafeWork NSW defines a bund as an embankment or wall that, together with the floor of the compound, is sufficiently impervious to retain spillage or leakage.

Why is bunding important?

  • It stops hazardous liquids from migrating into drains or soil, protecting waterways and corporate reputation.
  • It satisfies the Work Health and Safety Regulation 2017 duty to manage chemical risks.
  • It slashes clean-up labour, keeping staff productive and the plant running.

What size bund or spill containment unit should I use?

As a rule of thumb:

  • Single drum: a 250 L spill pallet covers most 205 L drums.
  • Four-drum station: select a 4 drum 230L bunded pallet.
  • IBC: use a 1,100 L spill containment pallet rated to at least 1,100 kg, or greater if the specific gravity of the chemical being stored is more than 1-1

Compliance note – AS 1940-2017: Storage areas for flammable or combustible liquids must hold the greater of 110 per cent of the largest container or 25 per cent of the aggregate volume.

Are ContainIt bunding products compliant with Australian standards?

Yes. Our polyethylene and steel models are engineered in line with relevant Australian Standards and engineered for load, chemical resistance and UV stability as applicable.

Can bunding be used for flammable liquids?

It can in specific situations, however, ContainIt also offers specialised dangerous goods storage containers with integral bunds, flame arrestors and ventilation that may be better suited to fuels or solvents.

What are the five steps of spill containment?

  1. Identify: Know the liquids and volumes on site.
  2. Contain: Position the correct bunding or spill containment pallet under or around vessels.
  3. Control: Isolate ignition sources, stop the leak at its source.
  4. Clean: Deploy absorbents, neutralisers and your spill kit.
  5. Dispose: Segregate waste, complete incident records and restock kits.

What sort of bunding do I need?

Match the material to the liquid:

  • Polyethylene for most acids, alkalis and oils
  • Galvanised steel for fuels and non-corrosive chemicals
  • Stainless steel for aggressive solvents or food-grade processing

How do I choose the right bunding solution?

Consider chemical compatibility, storage footprint, forklift access, weather exposure and required sump capacity. Our team can audit your site and recommend the safest, most productive fit.
